Pursuing one of Africa’s most ambitious clean industrialisation agendas, Namibia is operating at a scale that places it in a different conversation from most of its continental peers. The long-term vision is to produce between 10 and 12 million tonnes of hydrogen equivalent annually by 2050, potentially capturing 5 to 6% of projected global hydrogen trade volumes. For a country whose economy has historically been anchored in mining, agriculture and fishing, that ambition represents a fundamental economic repositioning.
The foundations are genuinely strong. Namibia’s combination of exceptional solar irradiance, strong coastal winds, low population density and political stability has attracted approximately N$151 billion in foreign direct investment between 2021 and 2024, much of it linked to energy, mining and green hydrogen projects. European investors view Namibia as a priority destination for future renewable energy exports. Government projections suggest the hydrogen sector could create approximately 102,000 jobs by 2030 whilst contributing around N$129 billion to GDP during the investment phase alone.
The flagship projects illustrate the strategy’s ambition. The Daures Green Hydrogen Village, supported by Germany with approximately €12.2 million in funding, is demonstrating green hydrogen production whilst building local technical expertise. HyIron Oshivela is applying renewable hydrogen to green iron production by moving beyond raw material exports towards value-added industrial manufacturing, which is precisely what Namibia’s broader strategy demands. Infrastructure investment in ports, transport corridors and energy systems is advancing in parallel.
The sector has not been without setbacks. German energy company RWE’s withdrawal as a key offtaker from the Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project in late 2025, citing slower-than-expected global hydrogen demand growth, highlighted the genuine uncertainties that remain in global hydrogen markets. Infrastructure gaps, pricing concerns and evolving international regulations continue to affect investment decisions across the sector. Namibia has responded by maintaining strategic direction whilst seeking new partnerships rather than retreating from its objectives. The goal is an integrated green industrial economy producing green ammonia, green iron and renewable energy technologies, not simply a hydrogen export operation. Whether Namibia can execute at the scale and pace its ambitions require remains to be seen but its positioning as Africa’s most serious green hydrogen contender is already established.
